Out of work actors In out of work towns Just need the next job To turn things around The next breaks the big one The next break's The awards Red carpet Camera flash Oh so adored But reality bites As the rent is due Pulling pints Anything that you can do To make ends meet When you need them too But I’d still fall for you Any night In any room Would you still fall for me too? Out of work actors Out of their heads Dreaming a dream From the warmth of their beds The next breaks the big one The next breaks The awards Red carpet Camera flash Oh so adored But reality bites When times get tough The audition’s over They’re calling your bluff And this is where The smooth gets rough But I’d still fall for you Any night In any room Would you still fall for me too? And I’d still hesitate To walk on to an empty stage I’ll wait in the wings For you Middle 8 Chorus

Swear I saw you at the bandstand Saturday afternoon Same slouch, same duffle coat But there's no way That it could ever be true I never see you in The Greyhound That's no surprise as you know That place went up in flames Many years ago Haven't seen much of the old lot I heard Marco lost his job That's no surprise, if you need me to surmise Marco was lucky getting where he had got I miss our rambling conversations Smoke rings, sharpened elbows I felt so alone Since you had to go Skimming stones in the afternoon Cross the waters of Cullercoats Bay Same old thoughts That never go away Funny how the times pass Sand through the hour glass All our yesterdays I've kept an eye out for your brother Your mother's doing ok I never see her smile Like I did as a child She's not as much to smile about these days And as for your old man He's still a walking cliche But who can find the words When there's nothing to say? Skimming stones in the afternoon Cross the waters of Cullercoats Bay Same old thoughts That never go away Funny how the times pass Sand through the hour glass All our yesterdays Skimming stones in the afternoon Cross the waters of Cullercoats Bay Same old thoughts That never go away Funny how the times pass Sand through the hour glass All our yesterdays

about

We formed The Hightowns in early 2023 after I finally gave in to Pete Moffat's occasional yet persistent demands that we should build upon the odd drunken Everly Brothers sing song and develop original tunes with our own harmonies.

We bought the suits. We bought the matching guitars. We, well... we committed.

I had been playing sporadic solo material gigs with Neil Hopper (who is also one of Pete's oldest friends) on double bass. So he was a shoo-in.

Neil, who also happens to lead a nine piece jazz band called House of the Black Gardenia (look them up on here!) had a friend, Katja, who he assured us was a fantastic violinist... he was, of course, right.

We got Tom involved on drums because Tom's got two young kids and needed an excuse to get out of the house and rehearse. It also helps that he's a great drummer.

We played our first gig at The Cumberland Arms in May of that year.

Unlike other - fun yet mostly unproductive - projects that we've collectively been involved in, we knew it was imperative to strike while the iron is, if not hot, at least luke warm... so after a few more shows we decided, perhaps recklessly, to record what we had and put it out as our debut album.

This is just that.

Eight songs recorded over two days live at Simpson Street Studios, Thropton, Northumberland under the watchful eye of expert recordist (and all round good egg) Ian Stephenson in September 2023.

They are all stories. From out of work actors to jilted husbands; randy councillors to widowed teenagers and ancient rivers to loved ones gone too soon. These stories make a town go round.

We hope you enjoy them.
